Year-round pool: how to swim outdoors even in winter

You winterize a conventional pool for the winter and do not use it for several months. However, there is a way to swim outdoors all year round — a swim spa pool with a counter-current system. We explain why it works even in freezing weather and how to operate it economically.

Why a swim spa works even in winter

Year-round operation is made possible by a combination of three things: the insulated shell of the swim spa, an insulated thermal cover and powerful heating. A heat pump is ideal, keeping the water at a comfortable temperature even during freezing weather while using little energy. You can swim against the current and relax while snow falls around you.

How to operate a year-round pool economically

  • High-quality insulation — the basis for low heat loss.
  • Covering — whenever you are not using the swim spa, cover it; the thermal cover retains heat.
  • Heat pump — heats the water considerably more economically than a direct electric heater.
  • Stable temperature — maintaining the temperature is more economical than reheating the water each time.

Swimming regardless of the length of your garden

The counter-current system creates a continuous flow of water that allows you to swim in place — you do not need a long pool. A year-round swim spa therefore fits even on a smaller plot. We discuss how to choose the right counter-current performance in our article on pools with counter-current systems.

A swim spa or a conventional pool?
