Hot tub for terrace or roof: how much does it really weigh and when to call a structural engineer

A hot tub on your terrace or rooftop is a wonderful thing — a bath with a view, just steps from your living room. But it's also 1.5 to 3 tons per few square meters, a load that most terraces don't take into account. The honest answer to the question "will my terrace withstand this?" is: no serious person can guarantee it without a structural engineer. Here's why — with specific numbers that you won't find anywhere else.

How much does a hot tub really weigh?

Everything counts: tub + water + people. For our hot tubs, the total weight of a filled hot tub with people is approximately 800 kg for the smallest models up to 3,000 kg for the large ones — and au swim spa even more. Spread out on the floor plan, this means approximately 450–500 kg/m².

Example: a six-person hot tub with a footprint of ~2.3 x 2.3 m holds over 1,400 liters of water. The water alone weighs over 1.4 tons, plus the tub and six adults — a total of around 2.4 tons per 5.3 m², or roughly 4.5 kN/m².

What the standards say — the numbers that matter

Structures in the Czech Republic are designed according to ČSN EN 1991-1-1 (Eurocode 1). Characteristic service loads:

From the table it is clear at first glance: a hot tub exerts 1.5–3 times greater load than a regular terrace or ceiling is designed to withstand — and it doesn't belong on a non-walkable roof at all. This doesn't automatically mean that your terrace won't be able to handle it: the actual structural reserve is usually higher than the standard minimum. But only a structural engineer who knows the structure of the structure can say with certainty whether the reserve is sufficient.

When you need a structural engineer — and when you don't

Statics is not needed: above-ground hot tub — a paved area, concrete slab or paving at garden level. This is the most common and easiest installation; what exactly to prepare can be found in technical preparation for the hot tub and in the guide garden hot tub.

A static is always necessary when there is a room or air under the hot tub: raised terrace, terrace above the garage or living room, balcony, flat roof, attic. And ideally before buying a hot tub — additional reinforcement of the finished terrace means demolition, intervention in the waterproofing and unnecessary additional costs.

What a structural engineer examines and what he usually proposes:

Price: a simple assessment of one detail (can the terrace support a hot tub?) comes out to roughly 3,000–340 €, full-fledged static check with calculation 8,000–1 040 €. Compared to the price of the hot tub — and the cost of tearing down the patio — it's the best investment of the entire project.

How does the hot tub get to the terrace?

The second part of the task is the handling path. The hot tub is a compact unit — it passes through a gate over 100 cm and settles down as a whole. It settles down on a raised terrace or roof by truck crane: a regular 20-ton crane costs approximately 850–58 €/h plus shipping, a typical job with a minimum outage will cost ~4,500–250 €; for larger outages (over the house to the back terrace), a larger crane is needed for 1,400–83 €/h. We recommend sending the crane operator photos and dimensions in advance — a free inspection is usually standard.
