A hot tub on a terrace or roof: how much it really weighs and when to call a structural engineer
A hot tub on a terrace or roof is a wonderful thing — bathing with a view, just a few steps from the living room. But it also means 1.5 to 3 tonnes on just a few square metres, a load that most terraces are not designed for. The honest answer to the question “will my terrace support it?” is: no reputable professional can guarantee it without a structural engineer. Here is why — with specific figures you will not hear elsewhere.
How much a hot tub really weighs
Everything counts: the shell + water + people. For our hot tubs, the total weight of a filled hot tub with people is approximately 800 kg for the smallest models and up to 3 000 kg for large ones — and substantially more for a swim spa pool such as the counter-current pool. Distributed across the footprint, this represents approximately 450–500 kg/m².
Example: a six-person hot tub with a footprint of ~2.3 × 2.3 m holds more than 1 400 litres of water. The water alone weighs over 1.4 tonnes; add the shell and six adults, and the total is around 2.4 tonnes over 5.3 m², or approximately 4.5 kN/m².
What the standards say — the figures that matter
Structures in the Czech Republic are designed according to ČSN EN 1991-1-1 (Eurocode 1). Characteristic imposed loads:
Structure: Residential floor (category A)
Design imposed load: 1.5 kN/m²

The table makes it clear at a glance: a hot tub exerts 1.5–3× more load than a standard terrace or floor is designed for — and it does not belong on a non-walkable roof at all. This does not automatically mean that your terrace cannot support it: the actual structural reserve is often higher than the minimum required by the standards. But only a structural engineer who knows the composition of the structure can responsibly determine whether that reserve is sufficient.
When you need a structural engineer — and when you do not
A structural engineer is not required: for a hot tub at ground level — on a reinforced area, concrete slab or paving at garden level. A structural engineer is always required whenever there is a room or open space beneath the hot tub: an elevated terrace, a terrace above a garage or living space, a balcony, flat roof or attic. Ideally, consult one before purchasing the hot tub — subsequently reinforcing a finished terrace means demolition, interference with the waterproofing and unnecessary additional costs.
What a structural engineer examines and usually proposes:
- the composition and span of the structure and the location of load-bearing walls and beams,
- positioning the hot tub above a load-bearing wall or beam (often the least expensive solution — simply moving the hot tub by a metre),
- a load-distribution structure that spreads the concentrated load over a larger area,
- any necessary structural reinforcement (for new builds, simply tell the designer in advance — they can incorporate it directly into the design).
Price: a simple assessment of one detail (will the terrace support a hot tub?) costs approximately 3 000–340 €, while a full structural assessment with calculations costs 8 000–1 040 €. Compared with the price of the hot tub — and the cost of a collapsed terrace — it is the best investment in the entire project.
How to get a hot tub onto a terrace
The second part of the task is the access route. A hot tub is a single compact unit — it will pass through a gate wider than 100 cm and is installed in one piece. It is placed on an elevated terrace or roof using a mobile crane: a standard 20-tonne crane costs approximately 850–59 €/h plus transport, and a typical job with the minimum call-out costs ~4 500–250 €; a larger crane costing 1 400–83 €/h is required for a greater reach (over the house to a rear terrace). We recommend sending the crane operator photos and dimensions in advance — a free site inspection is usually standard.

Checklist: a hot tub on a terrace step by step
- Choose a model and determine the total weight of the filled hot tub (we will be happy to calculate it for a specific model).
- Find the building plans (floor/terrace composition) — this will save the structural engineer time and save you money.
- Arrange a structural assessment (3–25 thousand Kč depending on scope) — before ordering the hot tub.
- Follow the assessment: positioning above a load-bearing element / load-distribution structure / reinforcement.

- Plan the crane and access route.
