Counter-current pool or swim spa pool? Which is better for swimming
You want to swim at home, but your property does not have room for a twenty-metre lane. There are two options: add a counter-current system to a conventional pool, or choose a swim spa pool — a compact pool with the counter-current system at the heart of its design. It may seem like a detail, but in practice these are two completely different products.
How a counter-current system works
A counter-current unit uses a pump to create a flow of water that you swim against while staying in place. The width and smoothness of the flow determine the quality of the swimming experience: a narrow jet creates a turbulent stream that is uncomfortable to swim in, because your body keeps slipping out to the sides. A wide, smooth flow without entrained air, ideally with continuously variable output, comes closest to sports swimming.
Option 1: adding a counter-current system to a pool
A built-in or suspended counter-current pump can be added to an existing pool. The advantage is that you can use what you already have. There are three limitations:
- Seasonal use. An uninsulated outdoor pool remains cold from October to May — a counter-current system does not change that. Swimming season: 4–5 months.
- Flow quality. Standard retrofit units have a narrower, more turbulent flow; this is sufficient for fitness swimming, but usually not for regular training.
- Operating costs. Heating tens of cubic metres of water for half an hour of swimming is expensive — in practice, this is why it is rarely done and people simply swim in cold water.
Option 2: a swim spa pool
A swim spa pool is a 4–6 m long insulated vessel designed around its counter-current system. These are the differences that matter in practice:
- All year round. An insulated acrylic shell + thermal cover = swimming even in December, in water heated as needed (around 28 °C for training, or warmer for relaxation). Our operating cost calculator shows the cost in a few clicks — thanks to the small water volume and insulation, it is a fraction of the cost of heating a conventional pool.
- A flow designed for swimming. In high-quality swim spa pools (ours use a variable turbine system), the flow is wide, smooth and continuously adjustable — from recreation to training.
- Installation without major construction. A finished product placed on a reinforced surface: no excavation, in most cases no building permit, and you can take it with you if you move.
- Two functions in one. Combi versions have a separate hot tub zone with its own temperature — a pool and a hot tub in an area the size of a car.
Which option makes sense when
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| I already have a pool and swim recreationally in season | a retrofit counter-current system is sufficient |
| I want to swim or train all year round | swim spa pool |
| I do not have a pool and am deciding what to buy | swim spa pool — a compact, year-round counter-current pool |
| I want a pool and a hot tub but have a small property | combi swim spa pool |
What to ask before buying
Ask about the width and adjustment of the flow (try it in person!), the insulation layers and thermal cover (they determine operating costs), the shell material (cast acrylic lasts outdoors for decades — we provide a warranty of up to 15 years), and who will provide service. We manufacture in Jílové u Prahy, and you can try a swim spa pool in our showroom near the D1 motorway — even in your swimwear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a counter-current system be added to an above-ground pool?
Technically, this is often possible with suspended units, but an uninsulated above-ground pool remains seasonal and its thin wall limits performance. A swim spa pool is more suitable for year-round swimming.
How powerful should a counter-current system be for swimming?
The width and smoothness of the flow matter more than its power in kW. A practical test is whether you can swim front crawl at an easy pace without the flow pushing you to the sides — which is why we recommend trying it in person.
How much space does a swim spa pool need?
Typically around 2.3 m in width and 4–6 m in length, plus access for installation by crane or handling trolley. Exact dimensions are provided for each model.
Is swimming against a current the same as swimming in a pool?
The technique is the same; your body also has to hold position against a stable flow, so the training is often more intensive. Swimmers also use it for technique drills — you swim in place under a coach’s watchful eye.
